250x284px-mobile-mktgEver heard the expression ‘There’s an App for that’? Just in case you can’t remember when you first heard the phrase, I think for most of us, it was probably in 2009 when Apple released an ad promoting the release of the 3G iPhone.

One thing I was not aware of was that the first App’s were actually released before the iPhone was made available commercially (in June of 2007), not by much, but an interesting little factoid nonetheless and if you’re lucky it might score you a drink or a couple of bucks in a bar bet (you’re welcome… mine’s a Sazerac thanks 🙂 ).

It’s pretty amazing that App’s have come to be a part of the lexicon so quickly, but then again, not quite so much when you look at how they help us keep track of multiple tasks and information and all in the palm of your hand and as close as your back pocket or purse.

The internet revolutionized advertising by allowing us to target only the customer who is looking to travel to Hawaii at the very moment they decide that’s where they want to go. Prior to the internet and consequent advent of PayPerClick (PPC) ad campaigns businesses had to be willing to take a buck-shot approach to reaching their target audience. The best they could hope for, was to secure ad space on the right pages or best section of a newspaper, or during the commercial break of a TV show known to attract their target consumer profile, such as products for men during sports shows or for women during the soaps. Of course, there was also the dreaded bathroom or tea (a curiosity more familiar to our English readers I’m sure) break that advertisers had to compete and contend with too.

Imagine the look on the faces of some of those 1950’s MadMen if they were tele-ported to today, to be told they could sell ad’s that would deliver directly into the hands of the target audience, and at the very moment they were wondering “which restaurant should we go to tonight honey?” They’d die right there in their loafers at the very concept and pin-point accuracy of keyword targeting.

Suffice to say, having your own Custom App today goes way beyond the cool factor, it’s a way to make your business convenient and accessible to your all customers – past, present or soon to be. Stake your ‘pixel claim’ on their pocket real estate and it’ll be like you just slapped down a Hotel on Park Place in the game of Mobile Monopoly!
