Google announced publicly that as of the 21st of April, 2015 their algorithm would rank websites using responsive design and multiple device support higher on the results pages.
That’s a pretty big deal because typically big G don’t bother to spell out for us exactly what we need to do to make our sites rank higher on the SERP’s (Search Engine Results Pages), so when they do, you would think most of us would be pretty darned quick to rush off and do it.
When you also consider the billions spent each year on SEO and advertising trying to drive traffic to our sites, making sure they look good when folks get there probably should be at the very top of our list as website owners. The chart below shows what I nicknamed “the mad-dash-to-mobile” and it’s pretty clear, if your site is not responsive yet it’s probably desperately in need of some (design/dev) CPR.
Internet Ad Revenue Report 2014
What Is Responsive Design?
Responsive design needs to deliver a top quality user experience regardless if you’re viewing on a desktop, laptop or tablet. But, effective responsive design has to be a lot more than “well it works ok on my cell phone”.
Why Do You Need to Go Responsive?
It’s a fact as much as 60% of all traffic arrives from a mobile device and as much as 40% of users will leave and choose another site if the first one they land on is not mobile friendly.
I know there are some who favor a separate mobile website or even an App, but to be honest, for small to medium sized businesses the ROI (return on investment) simply isn’t there to a) justify the expense of developing multiple sites and b) deal with managing separate sites when a good quality, well planned mobile responsive website will serve all parties very well.
